Integrating Healthy Mind and Body: A Balanced Approach

Integrating healthy mind and body

When approaching one’s mental health, the physical aspect of health is often discounted and vise versa. Our physical health is closely linked to our emotional well-being. Likewise, our mental well-being impacts how our bodies respond to our environment and manage stressors. As in therapy, we encourage clients to practice health mental and emotional habits such as challenging negative thinking, incorporating mindfulness, and setting boundaries with others. Similarly, setting healthy habits in dietary behaviours, sleep patterns, and exercise routines can greatly impact the person’s emotional well-being.

To begin, setting reasonable and measurable goals for taking care of one’s body can look like talking a short walk in the morning, starting the day off with a glass of water, and setting limits on phone screen time. Eating a balanced, whole diet consisting of vegetables, proteins, and simple carbs can ensure the individual is receiving enough energy to think and respond to the world. Healthy sleep hygiene, such as putting away the technology, going to bed at the same time every day, even on weekends, and practicing calm place exercises can increase sleep and energy. Lastly, having healthy social relationships that encourage these healthy habits can further benefit the individual in long term health.

You may consider reaching out to other professionals such as nutritionist, naturopath, or personal trainer to assist with meeting these goals.
If you find yourself struggling with forming healthy habits in any of the areas mentioned above, please reach out to a mental health practitioner or loved one. Having accountability outside of oneself can be another useful strategy in managing overall mental and physical well-being.
